WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTION FOR PADDLERS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A paddle craft safety class will be offered Saturday, December 9, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. by Flotilla 96 of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.
The class will be held in the Collier County building at 13531 Vanderbilt Drive, Naples, in the Cocohatchee River Park and Wiggins Pass Marina.
For $10, paddle boarders, kayakers and others will learn safety issues – (first and foremost, always wear a life jacket!) – and the basic equipment they need, along with other issues of water safety.
Each year, on average, 700 Americans die in boating-related accidents; eight out of every 10 victims were not wearing life jackets. "Thousands of people would be alive today had they taken the simple precaution of wearing a life jacket when they went out on the water," said Virgil Chambers, Executive Director of the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC).
To combat these statistics, the NSBC, in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), is promoting life jackets.   Their message is:  Boat Smart. Boat Safe. Wear It,which stresses the urgency of wearing a life jacket no matter what kind of watercraft you’re using.
To register for the paddle craft safety course at  Flotilla 96, or to obtain more information, contact flotilla96_vesselexam@centurylink.net.
The USCG Auxiliary is an all-volunteer, uniformed component of the Coast Guard dedicated to promoting and improving boating safety on America’s waterways.
