Qualification Examination

What is a Qualification Examination?

The final step in the process of qualifying for Boat Crew member, Coxswain, or Personal Watercraft Operator is an examination by a Qualification Examiner (QE). Under the QE's direction, the trainee will complete a dockside oral examination and an underway check ride.

What is a Qualified Examiner?

The Operations and Training Officer (OTO) is responsible for certifying that a Boat Crew, Coxswain, or Personal Watercraft Operator candidate is ready for assignment to duty and able to function safely and effectively as part of (or a leader of) a team on an Auxiliary surface vessel. The OTO has appointed Auxiliary Qualification Examiners (QEs) to perform the examinations and to then provide a certification recommendation about a candidate. Auxiliary Qualification Examiners "work" for the USCG OTO and are not a part of the Auxiliary chain of leadership.

What is an Area QE Coordinator?

The Area QE Coordinator (AQEC) is an auxliarist, appointed by the Director, with the concurrence of the District Commodore, to work with the Auxiliary Operations and Training Officer (OTO) to administer the Boat Crew, Coxswain, and Personal Watercraft Operator training programs.

How do I request a Qualification Examination?

Requests for a 3rd year check ride are made to the AQEC by your FC, FSO-OP or FSO-MT. These request forms can be found in the Auxiliary Boat Crew Training Manual ( COMDTINST M16794.51A ) dated January 2007 (Appendix F and G).  The request is made to the AQEC according to which CG Station issues the patrol orders for the check ride.

Requests for Boat Crew or Coxswain dockside oral examination and check ride is also made to the AQEC after both the trainee and the assigned mentor feel the trainee has completed all tasks so that he/she can perform the tasks efficiently, safely, and without prompting.
