How to Join the Auxiliary


Eligibility

To join the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, you must meet the following criteria:

• Must be a United States citizen

• At least 17 years of age

• No criminal background (minor misdemeanors, such as certain traffic violations do not disqualify)

• Willingness to participate in Operations (boating, aviation, radio), Prevention (Marine   Environmental Safety and Port Operations), Public Education or other non-military roles suitable for unarmed, non-law enforcement volunteers.

• Willingness to support the U.S. Coast Guard and the Auxiliary

An Employee ID is assigned and a Personnel Security Investigation (PSI) is conducted by USCG, pursuant to submitting an application, fingerprints, a dues payment* and other paperwork.

If there are suitable PSI results, the new member is photographed and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issues a non-military identification card.

You will NOT be required to:

     • Move or relocate

     • Pass a physical fitness exam**

     • Report to “Basic Training”

     • Conform to the Uniform Code of Military Justice

     • Go on deployment

     • Own a boat or aircraft 

Dues are $42 per year. They go toward supporting our national infrastructure and funding items and events not provided by the Coast Guard.

**Members seeking qualification as Air Crew or Pilots must obtain an FAA Third Class Medical Certificate.
