Class Descriptions

There are only a few required training classes for members of Division 10 in 2013. Therefore, most of the classes in this workshop will be mostly informational.  However, many recent changes in a number of the Auxiliary programs will be of great interest to all our members.  Also, the general theme of this program, which will apply to most of the sessions, is “going beyond the expected”.  How we can be more effective in our assigned duties.  This will be accomplished by such means as demonstrations and interactive discussions. Your attendance and participation will help to make the day interesting and informative.

A.  New Member Track (Room 239)

  1. New Member Orientation – This session will include a full list of activities, not just qualification, in which members of our Division may be involved.  Which of those require training and certification, and what that involves.  A general discussion and listing of non-qualification activities and personal experiences will help the new member identify areas of involvement and projected timelines for accomplishment.   Carl Robinson

  1. Uniforms and Materials – What you really need and how to get it. UDC, 5th District Store, local venders, hand-outs from other members or the Coast Guard – you don’t have to buy it all yourself.  Much can be learned from personal experience and discussions of how we can more effectively disperse materials/equipment at the Flotilla/Division level.  Joe Wheeler

  1. Member Training – How to get the training you need for what you want to do.  What classes are involved, who are the required instructors, and what’s available online.  Orientation to Webinars, Flotilla/Division level training, a brief introduction to AUXLMS, and Advance Skills Weekends. Bob Licursi

  1. Forms, Forms and more Forms – How do you keep track of hours for yourself, your missions, and your program hours.  Where they go, how to do it electronically, how do I make sure it’s done right.   Interactive discussions on any questions you have on any of the forms you may encounter. Bill Case

B. Operations Track (Room 233)

  1. Operations 1 – Two sessions will be presented to all current Operations members as an update to many changes taking place in this vital program. Generally, the first will cover the proper classification of patrol types, how they are organized, and introduction to the new AOMS ordering system and how it works. Jim Beecher

  1. Operations 2 – This second session will deal with updating and/or clarification of the regulations on patrol expense reimbursement and update on facility requirements and how to enter information on them to the AOMS system.  Other items for discussion are PLB requirements, revisions in the SAR Addendum, mishaps during patrols and personnel injury policy. Jim Beecher

3.  & 4.  1 Hour TCT – This is one of the Workshops required annually for all operations members. Although it can be presented at the Flotilla level by a qualified Crew member, it is offered here in 2 separate sessions to help fulfill the requirement.  As with other sessions, emphasis will be on the scenario, perhaps modifying it to fit our personal on-the-water experiences. Paul Dowty

C. Mission Track   (Room 237)

1.  VE Workshop – A brief review of the 2013 VE Workshop will be followed by a practical interactive demonstration of the actual problems encountered while doing boat inspections. Additional topics of discussion that should be a part of all inspections will be discussed. Joe Nemeth

  1. PA/PE/PV/VE  Panel-  This session is open to all members qualified in these areas of Auxiliary service.  It will be set up as an open forum to discuss how these programs can be effectively improved by cooperative effort of all the Flotillas in our Division.  Results from this session could lead to development of plans at the division level that will help to strengthen these programs.  Chris Halliday (SO-PA),  Paul Best (SO-PE), J. D. Lockamy (SO-PV), Allen Pagett (SO-VE).

  1. The RBS Plan for 2013 – A review of the 5th SR District plan presented at the District meeting last September for partnership with a number of other organizations to help increase boater safety and awareness. This session, lead by Bruce Pettyjohn, District Directorate chief for Response, is especially important for attendance by those in Flotilla leadership positions Bruce Pettyjohn, (DDC-P)

4.  ATON Workshop. This class will serve as the annual AV Refresher recommended for all Aids Verifiers.  There will be a review of the reporting process; namely, verification vs checking an AID, and a sample of the "new" electronic forms.  Lois Dowty

D.   Miscellaneous Track  (Room 234)

  1. Diversity Workshop. All the new FSO-DV’s along with other members interested in finding out more about this new program and what it hopes to achieve in the Auxiliary will want to attend this session presented by our 5th District diversity leader Ernie Stevens.  Learn how to recognize and utilize the talent available in the diverse population typical of our members in the Auxiliary.  Ernest Stevens (DSO-DV)

2. & 3.  Preparation for the QE  – For all Auxiliarists that are scheduled for 3 year recertification or are looking to certify as either new Crew or Coxswain these 2-1hr session courses will take you through all the preparation needed to successfully complete the task. It will provide the motivation to prepare early and get it out of the way in a timely fashion.  Warren Edman (QE Coordinator, Sector NC)
