Flotilla 83 on Patrol on Claytor Lake

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer, civilian, non-military
arm of the U.S. Coast Guard. It serves the general public through boating
safety classes, vessel safety exams, and safety patrols on the water and in the
air.  Members of the Auxiliary have no law enforcement powers and issue no
permits or citations.  However they do work closely with law enforcement
to ensure the safety of the boating public. The auxiliary was formed in 1939
and today there are over 27000 volunteer men and women active on the water and
in classrooms in over 2000 cities and towns in this nation. Each year they save
more than 500 lives, assist some 15,000 boaters in distress and conduct more
than 150,000 courtesy vessel exams and teach over 500,000 students in boating
and water safety courses.
