MARINE RADIO MONITORING - BOATER ASSISTANCE

Posted by: James G. Munger, FC, FSO-IS, FSO-CM-FSO-CS, FSO-HR

Approval has been received for our USCG Auxiliary VHF Radio Facility located on Houghton Lake. This is great news for users of both Higgins and Houghton Lakes. When the facility is in operation it will be monitoring VHF Marine Radio Channel 16. Any boater needing assistance can contact Houghton Lake Radio on Channel 16.

Upon receiving a call for assistance, the Radio Operator will assess whether the situation is an emergency (life threatening) or non-emergency.  If the situation is life-threatening,  appropriate public safety first responders will be contacted and dispatched.  If the situation is determined to be non-emergency, the Radio Operator will attempt to find other boats that are close by to assist or if necessary contact local businesses or individuals who can provided the necessary assistance.

Regardless of the situation, the Radio Operator will stay in constant contact with the party needing assistance until the appropriate assistance arrives.

The Radio Facility will also be in contact with any patrols that the Auxiliary may have active on the lake.   Auxiliary patrols, if available, will respond to all calls

The radio facility will be operated by the Flotilla's  Commander James Munger, who is a certified USCG certified Telecommunications Operator.

The station will be in operation during special events on the lakes as well as during the summer months which are peak boating activity.
