Who We Are

We are a volunteer group of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliarists working very closely with our surrounding community, state, county, and local public services including Fire, Police, Sheriff, Park services. We support and partner with the Department of Natural Recourses, Corp of Engineers along with other federal agencies.

You will find our members serving in a variety of activities. Whether serving as an Honor Guard at a funeral, Teaching Boater Safety Courses, Patrolling the Lake partnering with the sheriff or DNR, performing a Vessel Safety Check, or meeting with community partners providing safety and boater information. Our tireless group of volunteers from all walks of life, skill sets, and occupations are here to service.

Lake Hartwell Flotilla 25

Lake Hartwell Flotilla 25 is a part of Division two (2) of the Seventh (7) Coast Guard Auxiliary District, and is active on Lake Hartwell and Lake Keowee in northeast Georgia and upstate South Carolina. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is part of the Department of Homeland Security.

The Purpose of the Auxiliary (Title 14 U.S.C. 822) is to assist the Coast Guard by:
  • Promoting safety and to effect search and rescues on and over the high seas and on navigable waters.
  • Promoting efficiency in the operation of motorboats and yachts.
  • Fostering a wider knowledge of, and better compliance with, the laws, rules, and regulations governing the operation of motorboats and yachts through safe boating classes.
  • Facilitating other operations of the Coast Guard.
Since its creation by Congress in 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary has served as the civilian volunteer component of the Coast Guard. Today, over 33,000 members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are active on the waterways and in the classrooms in over 2,000 cities and towns across the nation, all to promote boating safety. The Four Cornerstones of the Auxiliary are
  • Member Services
  • Recreational Boating Safety
  • Coast Guard and State Support
  • Fellowship
Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary help keep our lakes safe and enjoyable for recreational boaters through several programs:
  • Classroom instruction in safe boating skills, Personal Watercraft Safety, and other programs to introduce new boaters of all ages to water and boating safety.
  • Vessel Safety Checks
  • Safety patrols

Classes are conducted several times a year. The schedules will be listed on this web site. Classes cover such topics as safety equipment, which boat for you, basic boat handling, weather, trailering your boat, knots and lines, marine engines, and many other topics related to enhancing skills and safety in recreational boating.

Local flotilla members perform over 100 Vessel Safety Checks annually. These examinations are provided to boat owners wishing to have a free, courtesy check of their boat's safety equipment. While performing the VSC, Auxiliary Vessel Examiners conduct a "one-on-one" educational session with the boat owner, providing the owner with an opportunity to ask questions and obtain the latest information on safety equipment and regulations which affect the recreational boater. Vessel Safety Checks are free examinations of your boat and safety equipment by a qualified Vessel Examiner.

The members of the flotilla are also active in conducting safety patrols on our lakes. Using their own boats, which have been equipped and inspected to Coast Guard standards, they can be found on most weekends and holidays, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, assisting the recreational boater and helping to keep our waterways safe.

Flotilla 25 holds monthly meetings normally on the fourth (4th) Saturday of each month at 10:00 hours, at:

Portman Marina,1629 Marina Rd, Anderson, SC.
