Whether you are a power boater, sailor, or kayaker, a USCG Float Plan will work for you. Set up a basic plan ahead of time and save it on your computer. Update it when you decide where and when you're going to go. Then, email your completed plan to a friend or loved one who will follow up should you not return or check in as planned.
Why Prepare a Float Plan
The answer is simple - there are just too many facts that need to be accurately remembered and conveyed in an emergency situation. Without a float plan, you must rely on a friend, neighbor, or family member to remember detailed information bout your boat, home port, destination, departure and arrival time, etc. This is important information that could make a difference in the outcome of a search and rescue.
Who Should Prepare a Float Plan?
The USCG Float Plan is effective for boats of all sizes and types. Typically, the skipper of the vessel prepares the float plan. However, any member of the crew can accomplish this task. If you are a crew member, coordinate the preparation and filing of the float plan with your skipper.
